Arts Club Theatre Company presents
PARADISE GARDEN
By Lucia Frangione
March 11 to April 11
Media Opening: March 17

WORLD PREMIERE
Presented with the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad
Stanley Theatre

Local boy Day (Kevin MacDonald), a free spirit, lives next door to worldly Layla (Lucia Frangione), a career-driven intellectual. The two have nothing in common. Or do they? Over time these divergent souls come to understand each other in a way neither thought possible. A contemporary tale of romance and cultural divides so engaging it will change the way you see the girl (or boy) next door!

Lucia Frangione has been writing and performing in her own plays since she was 18 years old. Her 20 scripts have been produced by The Belfry, Pacific Theatre, Ruby Slippers, Solo Collective, Prairie Theatre Exchange, and Lambs Players San Diego. Winner of both the Gordon Armstrong (Holy Mo) and Sydney Risk (Cariboo Magi) playwriting awards, Frangione is also well-known for performing in her own plays, including Espresso, which was nominated for seven Jessie Richardson awards and found success across Canada. Paradise Garden director Morris Ertman, who also directed Espresso, says, "Lucia has written yet another play that masterfully entertains and provokes, but most of all delivers a very real insight into what it means to be a hopeful human being. This is a story about paradise, and whether we're willing to believe we're whole enough to inherit and inhabit it. It's multi-generational, spiritual, and human; and, it's a love story!"

Paradise Garden is the first of four new works commissioned through the Arts Club's Silver Commissions Project. Launched in 2006, the initiative provides funding and development resources to established Vancouver artists to create original works for the company's three stages (Stanley Theatre, the Granville Island Stage, and the New Revue Stage). Arts Club Literary Manager Rachel Ditor, who serves as the dramaturg for the Silver Commissions Project, says, "Paradise Garden is everything I hoped it would be when Lucia submitted a first raw draft several years ago—lush, funny, intelligent, and wonderfully unique."
