AVALER LA MER ET LES POISSONS From November 14 to 17, 2007, Théâtre la Seizième presents Avaler la mer et les poissons, a Théâtre de la Manufacture (Montréal) production, at the Vancouver Studio 16. Written by lead performers and major Québécois stage personalities Sylvie Drapeau and Isabelle Vincent, this clever, sensitive and sensuous work is the fruit of their intimate collaboration. As different as they are, forty year-old Ariel and Kiki are best friends –“chosen sisters” as they put it. Bubbly Ariel is a politician, as well as a mother, a wife and a lover. She is also ethereal Kiki’s earthy counterpart. Kiki is the solitary artist whose sole pleasure consists in painting the undulating motion of the ocean tide; but both are idealist and intensely committed to each other and to their beliefs. Avaler la mer et les poissons is the story of their relationship and how it falters when a false betrayal alienates them. Sometimes a person’s ambition or sadness can cast a pall over everything, even the happiness of those nearest and dearest to them. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, the death of a long-held ream or the end of a relationship, these losses gradually bring one to a greater understanding of oneself. In Avaler la mer et les poissons, the characters will go through this painful process and will need to undergo deep changes to achieve reconciliation. Inspired by a French proverb literally meaning “swallow the sea and its fishes,” the play is about the characters’ appetite for life and their need to embrace all it offers, no matter what may happen. Natural forces and raw emotions actually dominate the characters’ actions and drive their quest for an absolute happiness. In such an elemental work, the co-authors examine the serious subject of bereavement with sensitive humour and poetic acuteness. This heart-warming ode to friendship weaves from reality to an imaginary world, from public life to the solitary inspiration of the artist, through tableaux that range from deeply moving to gut-splitting hilarious. A compelling and beautifully feminine first-text that will leave a lasting impression.
