“A soul is not a thing. You can’t wipe it clean.” ~ Dressler

Lurking beneath the urbane world of the modern restaurant is a motley group of dishwashers who seem to have only their profession in common. This world premiere of Morris Panych’s new comedy offers a glimpse into a world where one person’s tedium is another person’s lifestyle.

The Dishwashers stars E. Miller as the old guy, Ted Cole as the new guy, Shawn Macdonald as the really old guy, and Toby Berner as the guy at the very end. Design team: Ken MacDonald (Set), Nancy Bryant (Costumes), Gerald King (Lighting). Stage Manager: Caryn Fehr. Assistant Stage Manager: Anne Taylor

Morris Panych is a writer whose work has been seen in Canada, the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia; an actor with more than 50 leading stage roles; and director of both his own work and that of others, including Vigil, 7 Stories, The Overcoat, Sweeney Todd, The Imaginary Invalid and Hamlet, Lawrence & Holloman, and White Biting Dog, and operas for Vancouver Opera and The Banff Centre. He has directed over 30 productions, as well as music videos for Spirit of the West. As an actor, he has appeared in many television roles, notably as a regular on Da Vinci’s Inquest and the X-Files series, as well as a Gemini-nominated performance in Cold Squad. He has been awarded Vancouver’s Jessie Richardson Theatre Award 12 times and the Sidney Risk Writing Award three times, and he was nominated for the Chalmers for The Cost of Living, Vigil, and Lawrence & Holloman. In 1995, Panych won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama for his play The Ends of the Earth, and another in 2004 for Girl in the Goldfish Bowl both of which premiered at the Granville Island Stage, in 1993 and 2002, respectively. Panych was born in 1952 and grew up in Edmonton. He received a B.F.A. in Theatre and Creative Writing from U.B.C. in 1977, and attended acting school E. 15 in London from 1977 to 79.

Upon hearing that Panych had won his second Governor General’s Literary Award, the Arts Club Theatre Company’s Artistic Managing Director Bill Millerd said, “Morris Panych is a Canadian treasure and we are so thrilled to have been witness to his great success-and delighted that he still, after all these years, considers Vancouver one of his homes.” The Dishwashers is the seventh Panych play to premiere at the Arts Club Theatre Company.
