Opening with a splash, three breathless brides (Natascha Girgis, Beth Graham, Daniela Vlaskalic) emerge gasping from watery graves – their bathtubs – to relive the tale of serial bigamist and murderer George Joseph Smith and how he literally took their breath away. Known as the “Brides in the Bath murderer,” this turn-of-the-century British swindler married `em, insured `em, and offed ‘em – and almost got away with it. The BC premiere of a story inspired by a Scotland Yard case. Described as “theatre as its mesmerizing best” and “so engrossing, exciting and entertaining you don’t want it to end” (Calgary Sun), The Drowning Girls won four 2008 Betty Mitchell Awards including Outstanding New Play, Outstanding Direction (for playwright Charlie Tomlinson who also directs this Gateway outing), Outstanding Production and Outstanding Lighting Design. The Drowning Girls comes to life through the talents of Set and Costume Designer Bretta Gerecke, Lighting Designer Narda McCarroll, Sound Design and Composition by Peter Moller, Stage Manager Cheryl Millikin, Production Dramaturg Dianne Goodman, Production Manager Patrick Fraser, and Producing Mentor Eva Cairns.
