Sept. 11-20

Local playwright to “Pop a Few Corks” at the Vancouver Fringe Festival

Canadian playwright Ann Ashley is bringing the darkly comic side of love, regret, friendship, and wine consumption to the Vancouver Fringe Festival with the world premiere of her play The Cork Screw.

The play revolves around the competitive friendship of two women as they grapple with a past filled with wine, men, and rivalry.

The Cork Screw will run at the Waterfront Theatre with six shows from September 11 to September 20, 2009. Information about show times and tickets can be found at http://www.vancouverfringe.com/ticket-info/

The premiere marks the debut of Ashley's career as a produced playwright, a career mile marker she is very excited to have reached. She applauds the Vancouver Fringe Festival for giving new and up and coming playwrights, actors, and artists an opportunity to shine. Among these are the cast of The Cork Screw, which includes recent New Image College of Fine Arts grads Joshua Garcia, Paige Ferbacher, Suzanne Newman, Gayle Yamamoto and rounding out the cast Marcia Yu, Bernie Yao and Katie Chapman.

It is Ashley's hope that audiences will support the Festival in its goal to promote local talent by attending one of the 60+ shows being featured this year; and of course, she recommends The Cork Screw be at the top of their list.

Cast Members:

Marcia Yu: (Mary)
Marcia is delighted to be on the Waterfront Theatre stage for the second time this year. Just earlier this summer, she was in the Flower Drum Song (VACT). She has also appeared in Sweet Charity (Pipedream Productions), Promises Promises (Metro Theatre), Cinderella Pantomime (Metro Theatre), and several television commercials. As a dancer, she has performed at the Vancouver Playhouse, Vancouver International Children's Festival, and Vernon Performing Arts Centre. This is Marcia's first performance at the Vancouver Fringe Festival and she would like to thank The Cork Screw cast and crew for their support.

Gayle Yamamoto: (Flashback Mary)
Gayle is pleased to return to the Fringe stage. She began training in Victoria at the Screen Actors Studio and Puente Theatre Corps, then continued training in Vancouver at New Image College of Fine Arts, and workshops with Mark Brandon. Past performances include Oklahoma!, Julius Caesar, The House of Yes, A Christmas Carol, and three seasons of Spirit of a Nation. Film and television appearances include Alienated and Trophy Wife. Gayle is also a professional Polynesian dancer with Paul Latta Polynesian Show Productions.

Joshua Garcia: (Daniel/Andrew/Victor/Bruce)
Joshua, dubbed "story-time" by former co-workers, continues his dedication to story telling in this charming, delightful and original comedy which will have you asking "romance"? Having part-taked in some of literature's most prestigious works in college (Chekhov's "Three Sister's" & Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler") Joshua continues to challenge him self with every project. Joshua studied at New Image College of Fine Arts where he was first given the opportunity to play dual roles in the same production his final year. His work in "Nick's Place," directed by Mel Tuck, served to prepare this young actor for
the many responsibilities ahead. In just over a year now Joshua has starred in two independent feature films ("Together We're Heavy"- CJ Wallis & "Some Boys Do"- Stephen Shypitka), modeled for brands such as REVLON Professional & American Crew and continues to make a lasting impression wherever duty calls, strengthening his repertoire. This is Joshua's first time performing at the Vancouver Fringe Festival and he is honored to part-take in the history of this city.

Bernie Yao: (Ravi/George/Victor)
Bernie's background in Performance Art started as a young voice actor in his native country of Taiwan. Growing up in North Hollywood, the city blessed him with an affection for different art forms. Fine arts eventually led Bernie to the prestigious art school of Emily Carr University. A place where he can wholesomely embrace his love of story telling, photography, music, colours and creative writing in the craft of Film Making. As a full time film student studying the techniques of Acting very seriously, Bernie recently landed a recurring Guest Lead role in Nickelodeon's new show; The Troop. Which hits cable television worldwide in September 2009. With a background in Improv Comedy, Interactive Theatre and Shakespere, Bernie can hardly wait to channel all of his passion and heart into The Cork Screw.

Paige Ferbacher: (Flashback Blanche/Mary)
Paige Farbacher has been living in Vancouver for 4 years now. She grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where she studied theatre for over 10 years. She has played many diverse roles, such as, Caliban in The Tempest and Elsa Schraeder in The Sound of Music. She just completed a 2 year program at NewImage College of Fine Arts and is ready to start her career. She is very excited to be a part of The Corkscrew cast and can't wait to perform at The Fringe.

Suzanne Newman: (Blanche)
Suzanne Newman studied her passion for acting at New Image College of Fine Arts and continues to work hard and better hone her craft. She has performed in such classics as; “The Three Sisters, Hedda Gabler, Dolores and the Blue Room.” Film work includes a 'knock-out' performance in the 2008 short film “Conversations of a Dangerous Kind;” written and directed by Vancouver filmmaker, Matt Leaf. This is Suzanne's first time performing at the Vancouver Fringe Festival and she is very excited about it.

Katie Chapman: (Flashback Blanche)
Katie has been performing on the stage and in singing groups since the age of 5. After doing many shows with the East Valley Childrens Theatre (Mesa, AZ), she made her professional debut at the Broadway Palm West Dinner Theatre (Mesa, AZ) at the age of 15. From there she branched out into film, TV, hosting and voice-over work in both Canada and the States. Katie just completed a run of the Mel Brooks comedy THE PRODUCERS at the California Theatre of the Performing Arts just outside of Los Angeles. Some of Katie's credits include: Film/TV- SUPERNATURAL, EUREKA, PRYOR OFFENSES (Showtime), LOVE NOTES (Lifetime), INUYASHA; Theatre- EVITA, ANNIE, BABES IN TOYLAND, PIRATES OF PENZANCE... just to name a few.
