The  Lesson at the 2009 Vancouver International Fringe Festival

“A  Professor awaits a fresh Pupil's arrival.
The Pupil arrives, eager  to  learn -- seemingly  promising  and  bright
 But as the Pupil's limitations become evident…the day's lesson takes a turn…”

“This potent ‘Comic Drama’ has the power to frighten and delight…
A cocktail of violence - psychological and physical - and comedy…
…the play is as fresh and relevant today, as at its premiere, nearly 55 years ago.”
(from www.citygarage.org/ionesco2.html)

Vancouver’s Airbag Productions inaugural production is, Eugene Ionesco’s, The  Lesson.

“What I love most about this play is the power dynamic between the two lead characters, The Professor and The Pupil “ says  Rebecca Low, Director of  The  Lesson“I  wanted to explore how that dynamic would change when the genders   of the two leads were switched”.

After graduating from University of Alberta, Rebecca spent two years in London, England working in Theatre education. Past credits include, Directing “Skin of Our Teeth”, Stage Managing “Burn This” in Vancouver and performing in the “Outerdance” project in Windsor, UK.

Throughout the play’s run, Sive O’Neill and Josh Hallem will be alternating in the roles of the Professor and the Pupil.

Sive O’Neill trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England. She appeared in touring theatrical productions across the UK and made her Vancouver theatre debut in “Under the Hawthorn Tree” earlier this year.

Josh Hallem’s recent projects include playing “Mike” in Party Pixel’s new short film, “Mike Inc.” which premiered in July at the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival. He also directed “The City Green” for the Walking Fish Festival in June.

The Professor’s Maid,  Michele Dodick, appeared in “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding”, the TV series “Dead Like Me” and the short film, “Memoirs of the Last Samurai’s Geisha”, which screened at the Vancouver Asian International Film Festival.

Heather Young is the production’s Stage Manager. She has stage managed Fringe shows over the past 15 years, and was Technical Director for the Vancouver Fringe (2004), Montreal Fringe (1999 & 2000) and a Venue Technician in Edmonton.
