13 The Musical What better use for song and dance than the exploration of that most awkward stage of transition from childhood to adulthood? A wickedly funny portrayal of a young hero battling the dark forces of gossip and geeks, bullies and cliques, parents and freaks….all while trying to throw the best bash the Midwest has ever seen and rake in the cool he desperately needs. Witty and clever, “13” is a coming of age that no one wants to celebrate and everyone wants to attend. “features a buoyant score by Jason Robert Brown (“Parade,” “The Last Five Years”) and a book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn that dances friskily on the borders of bad taste” The New York Times Evan is plucked by his divorcing mother from his idyllic existence in NY and plunked down in the middle of nowhere Indiana…just weeks before he turns 13 and throws the best bar mitzvah bash ever. This almost Canadian premiere explores teenage angst through the eyes of a tween Jewish boy whose life is crumbling before his eyes. Relatable by everyone who has toiled their way through crushing adolescence, but who better to portray these hilariously suffering pre-pubescents then those currently locked in the throes of it!!! Created to provide real life performance and production opportunities to youth in that awkward stage of transitioning from school, camp and program theatre to professional careers, Awkward Stage Production’s inaugural production of “13” boasts the youngest cast at the Fringe (12 to 18). And it doesn’t stop there. Awkward Stage Productions has teen musicians, crew and even Board members. Helmed by experienced theatre education professionals, Awkward Stage Production’s goal is to provide development in all aspects of theatre production, and their unique double casting provides older mentor players for the younger and less experienced while increasing the opportunities for more youth.
