Brown Girl In the Ring is a tragic-comic monologue, a regal meditation on bigotry from a Royal Highness with a difference. ‘The possibility that black people would be biologically connected to the European royal families has never been so outrageously explored and exploded’. Regina II, Queen of the new British Empire, no longer a celebrity to the Canadians, but head of the DNA Canadian family, is a genetic throwback who pops up five hundred years down the line to turn a few faces very red indeed. This marauding monarch, connoisseur of champagne ‘n’ poutine ‘n’ sushi is back, and she’s black – and in the new millennium there’s no way she’s going to be swept under the carpet.
