Following the overwhelming
success of the 20th Anniversary of the Vancouver Fringe Festival,
it’s natural
for TheatreSpace, producers of the Fringe, to create a new Festival
in Vancouver. This time it’s about high-calibre, innovative
one-person shows. Stage One Festival of Solo Theatre comes to the
Waterfront Theatre, February 2-6, with five unique solo shows.
In developing Stage One, TheatreSpace’s aim was to continue
to challenge and engage Vancouver’s artistic sensibilities
and to support and enhance the growing network of solo festivals
throughout Europe and North America. Stage One Festival of Solo
Theatre will be Vancouver’s contribution to the growing number
of solo festivals such as Chicago’s Single File, Calgary’s
Solocentric, and New York City’s Solo Play Lab.
Vancouver’s John Murphy is among the five acts selected
to perform at Stage One Festival of Solo Theatre. His 2003 hit
Fringe show, The Heretic, will
be reincarnated at the Waterfront Theatre. Alex Dallas, a Fringe
circuit veteran and past member
of Sensible Footwear, will bring Drama Queen to
Vancouver from Toronto. Bouquets and Elegies marks
the return of Jeff Gladstone
to Vancouver after touring with The Big Rock Show in Calgary.
Ben Ayres lives and breathes Sex,
Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll from
critically acclaimed writer Eric Bogosian. Omar Sangare, from Poland,
will grace the Waterfront stage with the Canadian premiere
of True Theatre Critic, a solo
play that examines the anguish of a defeated man.
