ARMS and the MAN Opening Night March 18: FREE Admission at the door in celebration of WORLD THEATRE DAY! George Bernard Shaw’s comedy Arms and the Man is fully loaded—with charm and panache, dashing heroes and feisty damsels. The title, taken from Vergil's Aeneid, "Of arms and the man I sing,” serves as a satiric tag for the play's thrust against romanticizing courage under fire. Arms and the Man contradicts the popular belief that soldiers are heroes who are inspired by patriotic sentiments, and presents warfare as a profession like any other. Notions of love and class are also turned upside down in this witty anti-romantic comedy of ideas, which takes the stage of the Frederic Wood Theatre by storm with a LIVE band playing all your favorite Bulgarian folk music hits!
MFA Directing candidate Mindy Parfitt directs Shaw’s comic skewering of heroism and “higher love.” Parfitt is Co-Artistic Director of Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Theatre. She directed both their award-winning productions - Sarah Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis and Daniel MacIvor’s You Are Here. In Montreal, she founded Soulfishing Theatre for which she directed and acted, and she has worked with other companies including Centaur Theatre, Theatre Columbus, Dark Horse and Tarragon. Locally, she has worked for Studio 58, Bard on the Beach, Playwrights Theatre Centre, the PuSh Festival, and most recently co-directed Palace of the End with Touchstone Theatre’s Katrina Dunn. Arms and the Man stars UBC BFA Acting students Kim Bennett, Andy Cohen, David Kaye, Barbara Kozicki, Fiona Mongillo, Jameson Parker, Ryan Warden & Ben Whipple. The creative team includes professional artists Ana Cappelluto (Set), Alyssa Semczyszyn (Musical Arrangement) & Carey Dodge (Sound), BFA Design students Craig Alfredson (Lighting) and Saghar Bazargan (Costumes). Live music is performed by professional artists Brian Cochrane, alumnus Michael Neale & BFA Acting student Mishelle Cuttler. BFA Design’s Jaclyn Buck (Stage Manager) leads the charge.
