2017 Cultchivating the Fringe winner, Multiple Organism, brings adults-only shadow puppetry to the Vancity Culture Lab!

The Cultch is pleased to present Mind of a Snail Puppet Co.'s Multiple Organism in the Vancity Culture Lab March 19-30, 2019.

Nudity. Projections. Puppetry. Original music. Personal hygiene. Cultchivating the Fringe winner, Multiple Organism is a multi-layered psychedelic dream about having a body.

An artist's life model, tired of being objectified, steals a magical paintbrush and falls down a proverbial rabbit-hole with a pair of sentient toothbrushes. She must decide whether to follow her old internalized script, or release this script and love herself for who she really is. "This is essentially a show about seeing and being seen," say Mind of a Snail creators, Jessica Gabriel and Chloé Ziner. "There's a new conversation happening about sex and power right now. This show is our queer little contribution."

Known for their multifaceted puppetry productions—utilizing unexpected surfaces and objects to bring their ideas to life—Mind of a Snail's work is inventive and surprising, often scooping up awards for innovation and excellence. Multiple Organism won the 2018 Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards Critic's Choice Innovation Award. It also won the Critic's Choice Award, Artistic Risk Award, Cultchivating the Fringe Award, and Pick of the Fringe at Vancouver Fringe in 2017, and the EAFF award (for artistic risk) at Orlando Fringe in 2018.

"Daring...raunchy...ingenious" — VueWeekly, Edmonton

"A must-see for anyone who appreciates artistic risk" — Georgia Straight

"There is a kind of genius in the combination of abandon and skill that Ziner and Gabriel bring to this piece"— Colin Thomas

Mind of a Snail is a shadow puppetry duo currently based out of Vancouver BC. Since 2003, Chloé Ziner and Jessica Gabriel have been developing a multilayered style of visual storytelling using overhead projectors as their main light source. Their performances play at the intersection of puppetry, visual arts, clowning & music. As artistic collaborators, they are interested in exploring beyond the boundaries of traditional theatre, and creating magical immersive experiences for their audiences. Mind of a Snail's shadow theatre is like an early animation created live before your eyes.

Since 1973, The Cultch (formally the Vancouver East Cultural Centre) has been one of Vancouver's most diverse and innovative arts and cultural hubs. The organization operates three theatrical venues, a gallery, and various ancillary spaces in the heart of East Vancouver. The Cultch offers dynamic contemporary programming in theatre, dance, music, and the visual arts, bringing world-class cultural presentations to thousands of citizens each year through its own programming and through providing rental opportunities for community users. Our purpose is to provide a venue for performance that serves a diverse and engaged public and provides space for artistic experimentation and development, building an audience for local companies and presenting cutting-edge national and international work.
