"We all dream a lot, some are lucky some are not, but if you think it, feel it, dream it, then it's real. You are what you feel."
Fifty years after Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber began work on what has become one of the most popular musicals in the world, Gateway is pleased to present its production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
To stage this family-favourite, Gateway has reunited Director Barbara Tomasic and Musical Director Christopher King (The Music Man and Crazy for You). Together with Choreographer Nicol Spinola (Theatre Under the Stars' Annie, Hairspray!, Annie Get Your Gun, and Mary Poppins) and an ultra-talented cast, they promise to deliver the kind of musical magic audiences have come to expect from this legendary show.
But the team will also bring a twist to the well-known tale. Based on the Bible story about Joseph and his coat of many colours, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is traditionally set in Egypt.
"We have decided to set our Joseph in the present-day dream world of a child who, through Joseph's story, is shown that realizing your dreams takes learning, perseverance, luck, and love," says Director Tomasic.
Joseph, a show almost entirely sung-through apart from a few lines of dialogue, was first produced for the London stage in 1973 and on Broadway in 1982, where it received 6 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre. Many major revivals have followed, including a popular 1991 London production and a national tour across Canada and the U.S. with Donny Osmond in the title role.
