How do we change our brains? And if we can, how far can we go?
am a delves into identity, self-knowledge, and neuroplasticity in a dynamic, unsentimental performance that reflects the aesthetics of two leaders in new performance: Amber Funk Barton and Mindy Parfitt.
am a is an encounter between dance and theatre. It is an encounter between artists from the cities of Montreal and Vancouver. Ana Cappelluto (sets/light) and Antoine Bédard (sound) are both theatre artists living and working in Montreal. Cande Andrade (video) and Heidi Taylor (dramaturg) join Amber and Mindy from Vancouver. Developed with PTC, am a is a playful encounter between audience and performer, between technology and human physicality, between true stories and science.
"We premiered am a last year at The Cultch and we are so excited to return to this work and deepen the exchange of our practices." - Amber Funk Barton
"Experimentation is at the core of this piece and we're still making discoveries in rehearsal. And of course, we really enjoy performing am a together." - Mindy Parfitt
As women 10 years apart, united in an exploration of how identity is constructed, Amber and Mindy move beyond confessional narrative into personal experiment. The performance is an ever-changing snapshot, as Amber and Mindy gain new skills and delve more deeply into what change means to each of their identities.
am a premiered March 2017 at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre and was nominated for two Jessie Richardson Awards. It was also named one of 2017's top ten shows by Jo Ledingham.
am a allows the audience to experience hope. It is an ode to personal strength and the capacity and potential to change. am a is a celebration of being human. Of daring to succeed. Of daring to fail.
