Mitch and Murray Productions returns with the Canadian Premiere of BODY AWARENESS by Annie Baker

With director Aaron Craven at the helm, Mitch and Murray Productions returns with another dynamite play, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Annie Baker’sBody Awareness, opening October 11 and running to October 20 at Studio 16 in Vancouver.

The Story: It’s Body Awareness Week on a college campus and Phyllis (Suleka Mathew) and her partner, Joyce (Jennifer Copping), are hosting one of the guest artists in their home: Frank (John Murphy), a photographer famous for his female nude portraits. Both his presence in the home and his chosen subject instigate tension from the start. Phyllis is furious at his depictions, but Joyce is actually rather intrigued by the whole thing, even going so far as to contemplate posing for him. As Joyce and Phyllis bicker, Joyce’s adult son, Jared (Zac Scott), who may or may not have Asperger syndrome, struggles to express himself physically – with heartbreaking results.

Body Awareness is a smart, modest work about ordinary, flawed people, grasping for connection, but none of it feels small, thanks to Baker's sharp ear for the deeply painful - and funny - longings squirming under her characters' dialogue.” – Time Out New York

With 13 Jessie Richardson Award nominations to its name, Mitch and Murray Productions is a theatre company that lives on the edge, with a focus on contemporary, provocative, character-driven storytelling. Recent works include the Vancouver premieres of Sex with Strangers by Laura Eason, Smart People by Lydia R. Diamond, and the Pulitzer Prize nominated play Detroit by Lisa D’Amour. Making their home in the cozy confines of Studio 16, Mitch and Murray Productions has been tagged by a loyal audience base as “HBO for the stage.”
