A tale of power and lust
Studio 58's 54th season opens with Shakespeare's Antony & Cleopatra, a tale of power and lust directed by Cameron Mackenzie (Managing Artistic Director at Zee Zee Theatre).
A reframing of the classic story, this lush and modern production follows the ghost of Cleopatra as she looks back on her life. She ruled an entire empire from the time she was 18, commanded armies, brought peace and stability to her people, and was one half of the most epic love affair in history—how did she lose it all?
The student cast pays homage to Cleopatra's spirit throughout the ages and explores the dichotomies of masculine and feminine in this gender-reversed production.
Mackenzie says, "Cleopatra was one of my biggest influences in the creation of my alter ego, the Queen of East Van, Isolde N. Barron. She is one of Shakespeare's most complex characters and one of history's most fascinating figures. An incredibly accomplished states-person and intellectual, she brought 22 years of stability and prosperity to the kingdom she fought so hard to protect. Using this historical perspective, I am so excited to delve into this love story."
"Yeah, I know that it's been a while
Been chillin' with my girls on the Nile
Imbibin' pearls and rockin' out to the lute
You won't find a sexier mama
Queen of Egypt and of the drama
Type of pure mystique you'd never dispute"
