Western Gold Theatre presents Sandsprite, a touching comedy by North Vancouver's award-winning playwright, Peter Zednik. In its mainstage debut, the production runs from November 12 to 29. Showtimes are at 2 and 7:30pm.
Sandsprite is about coming out of the closet at any age—and at any cost. When teenage lovers Brogan and Si meet again after 50 years, ancient truths unfold, triggering high camp, low blows, love bites, and bitter tears. Ultimately, the pair must decide: can their vastly different lives intersect with a happy ending? Both deeply moving and resoundingly funny, Sandsprite, at its heart, celebrates love.
The cast features Allan Morgan (Brogan), Adam Henderson (Si) and Alek Toledo-Cisak (Campbell).
The play is directed by Christopher Lam(playwright, actor & director bios are on the WGT website).
Western Gold Theatre's Artistic Director, Tanja Dixon-Warren, says:
"Sandsprite had its first public reading at our 2025 Have a Senior Moment! Festival, and it is really exciting for me to help bring it to a world premiere with a full production just over one year later. Not only is it fabulous to support local playwright Peter Zednik, it furthers our commitment to developing new plays by older Canadian playwrights.
As Peter Zednik says, "Sandsprite is about the experience of first love during a time when such love was prohibited. It is about a long-term queer relationship and focuses squarely on the senior perspective, contrasting someone who's been out of the closet for decades with someone who chose to side-step the entire gay experience: avoiding bath-house raids, park bashings and AIDS, but also, conversely, missing out on the euphoria of gay marriage being legalized."
This is deeply moving and I know will resonate with many. At its heart is celebrates love. It is also resoundingly funny!
Ageism is a very real thing. Stereotypes are rife in the history of theatre. Older gay characters are often portrayed as the funny neighbour offering sage advice; the silly queen adding a dash of humour; or the sure-fire first victim in a mystery. Sandsprite intends to debunk these stereotypes with characters that are three-dimensional and representative of a wide life experience.
The play has magnificent leading roles for two beloved Vancouver performers, Adam Henderson and Allan Morgan, and a wonderful supporting part for Alek Toledo-Cisak. The team is led by award-winning director, Christopher Lam.
Theatre, for so many reasons, changes lives and makes us feel better. It helps us see the world in a different way. It makes us generous. I knew immediately that this beautiful show would be loved by Western Gold audiences."
