Join the Beacham family for Sunday dinner. Revel in their word games and quick wit. Laugh at their foibles. But all is not as it seems as their lives unravel in front of us. We meet the parents, two adult children and their partners. The sharp-witted matriarch is busy making plans. Her husband prefers to take cover in his crossword puzzles. Their son is gay, living with an alcoholic and well on his own way down the bottle. Their daughter, with two young sons, is in a faltering marriage.

Western Gold Theatre is delighted to welcome William B. Davis as guest director for their main production of the 2017 season. Glenn MacDonald is set designer, and John Webber is lighting designer. The family members are played by Anna Hagan, Mia Ingimundson, Seth Little, Jordan Navratil, Howard Siegel and Chris Walters.

Playwright Elliott Hayes was a promising contemporary playwright when he was sadly killed by a drunk driver in 1994 in his late 30s. He was born in Stratford, Ontario to a theatrical family. His grandfather was an actor, and his father joined Stratford in its first season as stage manager. Elliott served for many years as the literary manager, dramaturge and occasional lyricist and assistant director at the Stratford Festival. In his memory, the Elliott Hayes Award recognizes Dramaturgy, sponsored by the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas.

Homeward Bound was first produced in 1991. One critic suggested the work was like “Neil Simon and Harold Pinter collaborating on a farce.” Margaret Atwood called Homeward Bound “a brisk, intricate … and tightly-strung play with … a lot of laughter in it”. A Canadian dramedy of manners, a celebration of life and an acceptance of death.

Shows are Tuesday to Saturday at 7:30 pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm, plus an added matinee on Thursday, October 19 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $32 at Brown Paper Tickets or call 604-363-5734.
